Five years ago, I downloaded Pokémon go. I played with it a bit, then left it alone. I didn’t start getting back into it.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Pokémon GO offers an engaging blend of augmented reality (AR) and real-world exploration. Players walk around their neighborhoods, towns, and cities to catch Pokémon, visit PokéStops, and battle at Gyms. The AR feature, which superimposes Pokémon onto real-world environments through your phone’s camera, adds a unique and immersive layer to the gameplay.

Community and Social Features

One of the standout features of Pokémon GO is its strong community aspect. Regular community events, such as Community Days and Raid Hours, encourage players to team up and interact. The addition of friends lists, trading, and gift exchanges has further strengthened the social fabric of the game. Attending live events like Pokémon GO Fest can be particularly rewarding, offering exclusive Pokémon and real-time collaboration with other players.

Events and Updates

Niantic, the game’s developer, consistently updates Pokémon GO with new content, events, and features. Seasonal events, limited-time research tasks, and special in-game bonuses keep the gameplay fresh and exciting. The game has also introduced new generations of Pokémon over time, ensuring that there’s always something new to discover and capture.

Fitness and Exploration

Pokémon GO encourages physical activity and exploration. Many players appreciate the motivation to walk more and explore new places, from local parks to historical landmarks. The Adventure Sync feature, which tracks steps even when the app is closed, further promotes healthy habits.

Challenges and Improvements

While Pokémon GO has many strengths, there are a few areas where improvements could be made. The game can be data and battery-intensive, which can be a downside for some players. Additionally, rural players sometimes face challenges finding enough PokéStops, Gyms, and diverse Pokémon compared to those in urban areas.

So the question circles back around, is Pokémon go still viable.

Absolutely, Pokémon GO is still a very viable game in 2024.
Despite being around for several years, Niantic continues to update the game with new features, events, and Pokémon. This constant evolution keeps the game fresh and engaging for both longtime players and newcomers.
Here are some of the reasons why Pokémon GO remains popular:

  • Community: The game fosters a strong sense of community, with players organizing meet-ups, raids, and other social events.
  • Regular Updates: Niantic consistently releases updates that introduce new features, Pokémon, and events.
  • Social Interaction: Pokémon GO encourages players to explore their neighborhoods and interact with others.
  • Fitness Benefits: The game promotes physical activity as players walk around to catch Pokémon and visit PokéStops.
  • Nostalgia: For many, the game taps into nostalgia for the classic Pokémon series.
If you’re a fan of Pokémon or enjoy mobile gaming, Pokémon GO is definitely worth checking out.
